The Lord of the Rings is an epic high-fantasy novel written by English author J.R.R. Tolkien, first published in three volumes between 1954 and 1955. Set in the fictional world of Middle-earth, it chronicles the quest to destroy the One Ring and defeat the Dark Lord Sauron. The influential work has been adapted into numerous media, most notably Peter Jackson's acclaimed film trilogy released from 2001 to 2003.
