Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist and political activist who escaped slavery and became a leading "conductor" on the Underground Railroad. She guided approximately 70 enslaved people to freedom, including family and friends, and never lost a passenger. During the Civil War, Tubman served as a Union Army scout, spy, and nurse, notably leading the Combahee River Raid which liberated over 700 enslaved people.
