About #HM Customs and Excise
HM Customs and Excise (HMCE) was a department of the British Government responsible for collecting customs duties, excise duties, and other indirect taxes, as well as preventing smuggling. Formed in 1909 from the merger of HM Customs and HM Excise, it operated for nearly a century. On April 1, 2005, HMCE merged with the Inland Revenue to create a new department, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).
