Malayalam is a Dravidian language primarily spoken by the Malayali people, native to the Indian state of Kerala and the union territories of Lakshadweep and Puducherry (Mahé district). It is one of India's 22 scheduled languages and one of 11 classical languages, with official status in Kerala, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry (Mahé). The language is spoken by approximately 35-38 million people worldwide and evolved from a western coastal dialect of Middle Tamil or from Proto-Dravidian.
