Henri Philippe Bénoni Omer Joseph Pétain, widely known as Marshal Pétain, was a French military officer and statesman. He gained national hero status for his command of the French Army during World War I, particularly at the Battle of Verdun. During World War II, he became the head of the collaborationist Vichy France regime from 1940 to 1944, for which he was later convicted of treason.
